Man allegedly leaves $700 cart behind during Fry’s shoplifting escape

[Pinal County Sheriff's Office]

A Casa Grande man thought he’d gotten away with shoplifting after ditching a shopping cart full of stolen merchandise.

Matthew Button, 37, walked past the registers and was almost out the door when a Fry’s Marketplace security guard stopped him around 4:17 p.m. Sept. 12, according to a probable cause statement.

Button ran toward his vehicle and left behind a shopping cart filled with nearly $700 of merchandise, the employee said.

Video footage captured the license plate on his blue Jeep Cherokee, which police tracked 30 minutes later heading eastbound on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.

Button allegedly confessed to police the attempted theft. He was arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail on suspicion of shoplifting, a class 6 felony.

The idea of a third space is a gathering spot that isn’t work or home. Think a place like the cozy Central Perk coffee shop in "Friends" or the bar where everybody knows your name in "Cheers." Maricopa, what’s your favorite third space?
