In a little more than two months, Maricopa voters will decide the city’s next general plan.
Proposition 414, known as the Advancing Maricopa General Plan, will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot, according to a news release from the city. The updated plan will replace Maricopa’s 2016 general plan; state law requires cities to update these plans every decade.
Maricopa City Council approved the updated plan June 3, following months of discussion and public input.
The plan provides long-term guidance on topics like land use and growth, transportation, parks and open space and economic development.
While some residents and city council candidates criticized the plan for lacking details, it does not approve individual development projects or guarantee specific businesses, services or amenities.
Matthew Klyszeiko of Michael Baker International, the consultation firm tasked with revising and getting feedback for the document, acknowledged these concerns in June. However, he said the document is meant to “just outline … the goals and policies that the community wants to adhere to.”
Mayor Nancy Smith called the plan “a guiding document.”
“It’s not an edict. And I think it’s important for our residents to understand,” she said in June.
If approved by voters, the updated plan would become the city’s planning framework through 2036. Residents are encouraged to review the plan before voting.
