The Smith Fire began around 12:24 a.m. Thursday on the Ak-Chin Indian Community near Smith Wash, just south of McDavid Road and northwest of the community’s Water and Wastewater Reclamation Facility. It is approximately three-quarters of a mile west of the Maricopa Meadows neighborhood.
Crews initially battled the blaze in the early morning hours Thursday, but it reignited by early afternoon. Flames could be seen from the edge of city limits through Friday morning.
An Ak-Chin spokesperson confirmed lightning ignited the fire and said it grew to 20 acres by 9 p.m. Thursday. The wildfire grew to 40 acres by Friday morning, according to Watch Duty and the Western Fire Chiefs Association Fire Map.
Neither source specified a containment level.
Fire crews from Ak-Chin, Maricopa, Goodyear and the Bureau of Indian Affairs were on scene battling the fire.
