Throughout the month of September, Exceptional Community Hospital will be hosting a food drive in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month.

The hospital will be matching donations to Maricopa Pantry — $5 for every pound of food collected — donating up to 1,000 pounds of food and $5,000 to support local families experiencing food insecurity.

Community members are encouraged to “make it count” and contribute what they can to help line the food bank’s shelves.

Nonperishable food donations will be collected in the hospital, 19060 N. John Wayne Parkway. An additional donation box will also be available at the Greater Maricopa Business Alliance office, 19756 N. Maricopa Road, Suite 100.

Suggested donations include canned foods, boxed pasta, peanut butter and other dry goods.

Hospital Medical Director Dr. Brad Green said he hopes community members can help make a difference in the lives of others.

“No one in our community should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from. Supporting Maricopa Pantry is one way we can come together to help ensure our neighbors don’t go hungry and that local families have access to the resources they need,” he said.

The idea of a third space is a gathering spot that isn’t work or home. Think a place like the cozy Central Perk coffee shop in "Friends" or the bar where everybody knows your name in "Cheers." Maricopa, what’s your favorite third space?
