Maricopa remembers longtime farmer Oliver Anderson

[Monica D. Spencer]

About 200 people gathered Saturday to celebrate the life of Oliver Anderson, a longtime Maricopa farmer whose roots in the community stretched back decades.

Family, friends and former employees gathered at the family farm on Farrell and White-and-Parker roads Oct. 24 for a barbecue luncheon and memorial service, where Anderson’s family shared stories about a man who poured his energy into farming, family and community service.

Plaques, awards and other memorabilia filled the display area, alongside a slideshow of photos from Anderson’s life. Members of American Legion Post 133 presented the colors and honored Anderson with a presentation to his family. Attendees also signed a book with messages for the family.

Anderson’s sons recalled their father’s work ethic, his devotion to his wife and family, his humor and his knack for finding new opportunities.

Anderson returned to the family farm in July 1954 after leaving military service. His father and a partner had purchased the farm in 1949, and it remained central to Anderson’s life for decades. His sons remembered growing up working in the fields, driving tractors and learning the business alongside their father.

The family said the farm has been in their family for 77 years. Old trucks, cotton-picking equipment and other remnants of the operation remain scattered across the property, offering a glimpse of Maricopa’s agricultural past.

Anderson’s work extended beyond the farm. He served about 10 years on the local school board and was involved with Rotary and 4-H, where he taught tractor skills and worked with livestock.

During the memorial, the family shared a 2018 InMaricopa video interview in which Anderson recalled a time when the barber shop and post office doubled as gathering places where residents caught up on local news.

“You can’t control change,” Anderson said in the interview. “You just have to sit back in your rocking chair, and let it happen, and hopefully it goes your direction.”

The idea of a third space is a gathering spot that isn’t work or home. Think a place like the cozy Central Perk coffee shop in "Friends" or the bar where everybody knows your name in "Cheers." Maricopa, what’s your favorite third space?
