(First InMaricopa) Two teenagers were taken into custody late last night after a string of break-ins and acts of vandalism in Maricopa’s Rancho Mirage neighborhood, authorities confirmed this afternoon.

According to a Maricopa police spokesperson, the suspects — a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old — were arrested after officers responded just before midnight to reports of suspicious activity near San Clemente and Avelino Drive in a recently constructed part of Rancho Mirage where several homes remain unoccupied.

Upon arrival, officers discovered damage to at least two of the new residences.

Investigators say the teens broke into multiple homes, where they smashed windows, damaged kitchen cabinets and engaged in dangerous behavior — including setting small fires by placing various items inside microwaves and an oven. In one home, the suspects allegedly turned on a bathtub and sink and left the water running, causing them to overflow.

Officers also recovered a small amount of marijuana in the possession of one of the juveniles during the arrests, which came after a brief search of the area. At 11:45 p.m., police officers swept the neighborhood with nonlethal weapons readied, according to reporters on the scene.

Both teens were booked into juvenile detention and face several charges, including burglary, trespassing, criminal damage to property, arson and possession of marijuana.

The total cost of the damages is still being assessed as the case remains under investigation.
