Mammograms and mocktails might not be the pairing that immediately comes to mind for a Saturday morning. But for Lashanda Brown, the combination is a way to make an important health screening feel a little more welcoming.

Brown, president of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Inc., is bringing the event back to Maricopa this Saturday for its second year under the “Mammograms & Mocktails” name.

The sorority is partnering with SimonMed to offer 16 free mammogram appointments from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Duke’s Roadhouse, 19395 N. John Wayne Parkway.

SimonMed’s mobile mammography unit will provide the screenings through grant funding. Afterward, attendees can grab a mocktail, snacks and spend some time with the sorority members.

Brown got the idea after attending a Phoenix event that paired breast exams with drinks. Since her sorority doesn’t serve alcohol, she came up with her own version.

“I just kind of put a spin on it because I like themes, and so I called it ‘Mammograms and Mocktails,’” she said.

The event also has a personal connection for Brown. She lost a friend to breast cancer in 2014 and has since participated in breast cancer fundraising walks and other awareness efforts.

“When I heard about the opportunity to give out free breast exams, I said, ‘OK, so this goes right in line with what I’ve been doing,’” she said.

Brown hopes the event fills all 16 appointments and gives residents another opportunity to connect with local organizations and businesses.

Appointments are first-come, first-served and require registration.

Brown said she hopes to see all 16 appointments filled.

“We’re a small but mighty community,” she said. “It is important for community presence, and for businesses to work together to show that we care about the community.”
