A major energy project south of Maricopa will go before a state siting committee Monday.

The Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee will begin a public hearing Sept. 21 on SRP’s proposed Marigold Energy Center, a mixed-generation and battery storage project planned in Stanfield.

The hearing begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the Francisco Grande Hotel & Golf Resort in Casa Grande and is scheduled to continue at 9 a.m. each weekday through Sept. 25, as needed.

SRP’s plans include a 230-kilovolt/500-kilovolt substation, about 4 miles of new 230-kilovolt transmission lines, 600 megawatts of solar generation, 400 megawatts of battery storage and up to 675 megawatts of gas-fired generation.

At an SRP open house in July, residents raised questions about public safety, fire safety, water use, emissions and potential impacts on local air quality. SRP officials said they were working through the concerns and responding to community input.

Electrical District No. 3, which serves Maricopa, Stanfield and surrounding areas, is evaluating a potential partnership with SRP to purchase some of the energy generated by the project.

A public comment session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Francisco Grande. Residents also can participate by phone or Zoom.
