Maricopa faces dangerous heat, even without extreme warning

Temperatures are expected to climb as high as 112 degrees in Maricopa this week as a strong area of high pressure settles over Arizona.

While the National Weather Service does not expect to issue an extreme heat warning for Maricopa, NWS meteorologist Mark O’Malley said the area will still experience a “major heat risk” and dangerously hot conditions. Unlike some parts of the greater Phoenix area, Maricopa is expected to cool enough overnight just enough to remain below warning criteria.

According to the forecast, highs will reach 111 degrees today and 112 degrees Thursday, the hottest stretch of the week. Relief is expected to arrive by the weekend, with temperatures dropping to 104 degrees.

Unfortunately, rain is not expected anytime soon. O’Malley said there is very little chance of precipitation in the greater Phoenix area for at least the next two weeks.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and check on vulnerable neighbors during the heat.
