At least three veterans will get help with gas and groceries thanks to an $860 donation Monday night from the Maricopa Moose and Duke’s Roadhouse.

The organizations presented the check to Veterans in Need during their regular bingo night at the Western-themed restaurant. The Moose contributed $430 from bingo proceeds, and Duke’s matched the amount.

The donation will help veterans cover immediate expenses as they work toward longer-term stability, a spokesperson said.

This is the second year Veterans in Need has been selected to receive a donation from the Maricopa Moose, a fraternal volunteer organization that raises money for local charities through bingo.

The donations are part of a year-long effort by the Moose to give back to the community, as well as raising funds for their lodge and Moose charities. Donations have topped $11,000 in that time.

The monthly donations vary depending on the funds raised, with Duke’s matching the Moose’s contribution, said Moose Heart of the Community Chairperson Patricia Stillman. The Maricopa Pantry is expected to be the next beneficiary of the program.

Stillman said with holidays coming up, they’re planning unique bingo nights. That includes a Halloween-themed one next week.

“If you show up wearing a costume, a Halloween shirt or anything Halloween-related, you get a free card to play,” she said.

The idea of a third space is a gathering spot that isn’t work or home. Think a place like the cozy Central Perk coffee shop in "Friends" or the bar where everybody knows your name in "Cheers." Maricopa, what’s your favorite third space?
