Faith-based van rolls out free ultrasounds in Maricopa

The mobile pregnancy testing and ultrasound van now serving Maricopa is shown at a November event in Chandler. Inset: Laura Johnson, left, and medical director Mary Jo Heinrichs standing in front of the van while it was parked at Calvary Chapel in Maricopa.

Think you might be pregnant?

While Maricopa has two established obstetrics and gynecology offices, Arizona is facing a critical shortage of OB providers statewide, leaving many patients with limited access to care. A mobile option is now offering free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds in the city.

Image Clear Ultrasound Mobile Services submitted paperwork to operate in the parking lot of Stagestop Marketplace, according to public records obtained by InMaricopa. The van, nicknamed “Esther Naomi,” was spotted around Maricopa last week.

A flyer included in the paperwork said the service would operate Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide free pregnancy tests, counseling and community resources for Maricopa residents. The provider’s website does not yet list Maricopa as a service location.

However, a video posted Tuesday to Calvary Church’s Instagram page advertised hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays. In the video, medical director Mary Jo Heinrichs of the Chandler-based operation says, “Come on by!”

The van is operated by the Pregnancy Care Center of Chandler, a faith-based nonprofit organization that offers care before, during and after pregnancy.

Its website states the organization “does not provide or refer for abortions, but we lovingly and accurately discuss this option so our clients can make an informed choice.”
