A 19-year-old driver accused of speeding away from a Maricopa police officer, crashing into a median and fighting officers during her arrest was charged with unlawful flight and DUI, according to court records.

According to a probable cause statement, an officer responded to a call near John Wayne Parkway and Bowlin Road about 6:48 a.m. Oct. 24. He saw a vehicle speed away before crashing into a median.

Despite this, the vehicle continued swerving through the roadway before stopping after its front passenger-side tire blew out near Alterra Parkway, according to the probable cause statement.

The officer identified the driver as Destini Freeman and said he smelled alcohol when he approached her. Freeman initially refused to exit the vehicle and then attempted to run, according to the statement.

A second officer helped detain Freeman. Police said she pushed, pulled and kicked officers, striking them several times as they tried to handcuff her.

A passenger told police the group had been drinking and that Freeman was also under the influence of cocaine, according to the probable cause statement. The passenger also said Freeman did not want to stop because she had a warrant and a firearm was in the vehicle.

Officers obtained a search warrant for a blood sample, and lab results showed alcohol and cocaine in her system, according to the statement.

Freeman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, unlawful flight, speeding and not having a valid drivers license, and was booked into Pinal County Jail. Court records show Freeman was charged with unlawful flight from a pursuing law enforcement vehicle, a Class 5 felony, and first-offense DUI involving liquor, drugs or vapors, a Class 1 misdemeanor.
