Cyclist hit in drugged-out hit-and-run

A John Wayne Parkway driver was high on drugs when he hit a bicyclist with his car and fled the scene Friday night, according to Maricopa Police Department.

Cops arrested 31-year-old Alan Garcia on charges of hit and run, aggravated assault, aggravated DUI, drug DUI, driving with a revoked license and injuring someone in a crash.

Police responded to the crash involving a Nissan Altima and a bicyclist on North John Wayne Parkway near West Edison Road around 9:30 p.m., according to a probable cause statement.

Garcia reportedly hit the rear end of the bicycle, which was in a crosswalk, causing the bicyclist to “fly off his bike,” the statement said. The bicyclist sustained scrapes on his elbows.

Several witnesses told police Garcia sped away from the crash site.

Cops found Garcia near West Roth Road and North Ryans Trail in the Villages at Rancho El Dorado.

Police noted he was impaired but refused to take a field sobriety test. When officers asked Garcia questions about the crash, he “would just stare straight ahead” and seemed like he “was lost.”

Police obtained a warrant for his blood.

Garcia was arrested and booked into the Pinal County jail and faces more than 33 years in prison.
