Copa Farmers Market is heading indoors for the summer, but founder Kevin Okuma says the bigger story is what shoppers will find when they get there: more local vendors and farmers.
Beginning Sunday, June 14, the market will move from its outdoor location at Lowe’s to Central Arizona College, 17945 Regent Drive. There, vendors will operate in Buildings A and B from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The move comes as the market continues to grow. Since January, Okuma estimates the market has added 15 to 20 new vendors, including several local agricultural producers.
Among them is Ibarra Farms, a Maricopa-based hydroponic farm that recently made its debut at the market. Hidden Grove, a family farm in Hidden Valley, has also joined the vendor lineup.
“After all this time of begging and praying for a farmer, I finally found them,” Okuma said.
The market’s growth is also prompting an expansion indoors. During last year’s summer season, vendors were packed into a single building at CAC. This year, the market will occupy two buildings to provide additional space for shoppers and vendors.
“As we’ve grown, we need that extra space,” Okuma said. “It was getting a little crowded.”
Other recent additions include Windmill Mountain Ranch, a local beef producer, along with several new artisan and specialty vendors.
“What I’m most excited about is that we’re still growing,” Okuma said. “It gives me such pleasure to see the community grow and the market grow.”
