After a series of Republican-led candidate events in Maricopa, local Democrats are planning one of their own next week.

Maricopa-based organization Blue Copa will bring 13 local, state and federal candidates to Maricopa for a community town hall 7 to 9 p.m. June 11. Organizers said the location will be announced closer to the event.

The town hall is sponsored by Legislative District 16 Democrats, the Pinal County Democratic Party and the Arizona Democratic Party.

Province resident Linda VanOrsdol, a member of the Democratic-led Blue Copa, said she hopes the event attracts not only Democrats but also independents and Republicans.

“I think it’s important that people get to know the candidates running for office so they can better educate themselves as to who they vote for,” she told InMaricopa

Attendees include incumbents like Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, as well as candidates like congressional candidate Jonathan Nez and Julia Gusse for the Arizona House of Representatives. Local candidates include Councilmember Henry Wade, city council candidate Chrystal O’Jon and potential Maricopa Unified School District board candidate Latrinda Williams.

“A lot of people tend to vote on party lines and they don’t know about the other side of the aisle,” VanOrsdol said. “I am just hoping that people will have an open enough mind to hear the other side … and think about who would be best in that position.”

  1. Because of Republican policy of growth no matter what this city is turning blue. Congratulations! 👏

    1. Eh, we’ll see. Dems have been pretty much useless the last 10 years which is why I went Independent.

      1. Well Republicans have only created at least an hour commute on the 347 from 5:30 to 8AM and 2-6PM. 15 minute drives from Rancho to Copper Sky. Lack of a serviceable Hospital, less Law Enforcement, Fire, EMT’s per 1000 residents than the Valley average. They have failed in even basic government.

  2. Can we get a wellness check on TAB? He is very, very old, after all.

This is the kind of article he would normally be all over, bitching about Dems and liberals and how dumb they are and probably sprinkling in a slur or two.

I wonder if he’s still with us?
