Transparency builds trust in local government

[Monica Spencer]

Trust is one of the most valuable assets any city government can have. Residents expect their elected officials to make decisions openly, responsibly, and in the best interest of the community. When questions arise about how public funds are spent, those questions deserve answers.

Recent discussions regarding a no-bid contract awarded by the City of Maricopa have sparked conversations throughout our community. While reasonable people may have different perspectives on the specifics, I believe the larger issue is one of transparency and public confidence.

Taxpayer dollars belong to the residents of Maricopa. Every expenditure should be approached with accountability and a commitment to ensuring the public understands how and why decisions are made. Open government is not about politics. It is about earning and maintaining the trust of the people we serve.

As our city continues to grow, we must also strengthen our policies and procedures. Competitive bidding should be the standard whenever practical. Clear disclosure requirements should exist whenever elected officials, city contractors, or city vendors have relationships that could create the appearance of a conflict of interest. Even when actions are technically permissible, transparency helps prevent questions and protects public trust.

Maricopa has made tremendous progress over the years, and I believe our residents deserve a government that operates with the highest ethical standards. We should welcome scrutiny, encourage public participation, and embrace transparency as a core value of local government.

When I elected to the City Council, I will advocate for policies that increase transparency, strengthen procurement oversight, and provide residents with greater visibility into how taxpayer dollars are spent. Our community deserves a government that is open, accountable, and focused on serving the public.

The future of Maricopa depends not only on the decisions we make but on the trust we build along the way.
