A Maricopa teenager escaped serious injury after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene late last night, according to Maricopa police.

Police responded to a reported hit-and-run near Colby and Vintage Drives in the Rancho El Dorado neighborhood around 11 p.m., Maricopa Police Department spokesperson Elle Ortega confirmed to InMaricopa.

A 16-year-old was riding an e-bike when they were struck by a red SUV-type vehicle. The driver left the scene, and officers were unable to obtain a license plate number, make or model information.

The teen suffered minor scratches and was not transported for medical treatment, Ortega said.

A social media post circulating in the community described the crash as occurring around 10:30 p.m. after vehicle ran a stop sign and knocked the rider off the bike, sending him “flying 10 to 15 feet into the road” before the driver fled.

The post also claimed the bike showed red paint down one side following the crash.

Police said no additional details were immediately available.

The late-night crash comes as city officials weigh new sidewalk and pedestrian safety rules following a deadly recent string of vehicle collisions involving pedestrians and e-bikes in Maricopa.

Maricopa's growing traffic has come with a troubling trend: an uptick in crashes with pedestrians and bicyclists. While the city government suggests changing rules for sidewalk use and pedestrian habits in the roadway, others think lowering the speed limit could help.

So, we're curious. Do you think dialing back speed limits could actually make our streets safer?

  1. This is a silly comment. “No — it just slows traffic.” Any increase in speed or the speed limit would only save seconds in Maricopa. Work the numbers and see for yourself.
