A man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after he threatened to burn down a Verizon store last week, police say.
Officers responded to a Verizon store on John Wayne Parkway around 7 p.m. June 22 after an employee said a customer, identified as Jason Bidwell, grew irate over a long wait for service, according to a probable cause statement. The employee told police Bidwell began cursing, threatened to set the store on fire and started approaching him and two customers before he called police. He told officers he had asked Bidwell to leave at least three times.
When an officer approached Bidwell inside the store, he pulled away and told the officer, “Do not f*ck with me,” according to a probable cause statement. Bidwell tried to leave the store but was hit with two sets of taser cartridges and taken into custody.
Bidwell was evaluated by firefighters and taken to a hospital for medical clearance. During a search of Bidwell’s vehicle, police found what they believed were two “improvised explosive devices,” according to the probable cause statement.
During an interview, Bidwell said he built the devices from household items for self-defense because he believed bombs had been placed around his home. He also admitted he threatened to burn down the store but “the threat was made out of frustration” and he did not plan to follow through, a probable cause statement said.
Officers also noted Bidwell appeared intoxicated during the interview.
Bidwell was arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail on suspicion of terrorism, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
According to court records, prosecutors later charged him with criminal trespass, threatening and intimidation, resisting arrest and weapons misconduct. His arraignment will take place July 2.
