A Saturday night out at Duke’s Roadhouse turned chaotic when a Sorrento man allegedly punched a bouncer and shattered a car window before being hauled off to jail.
According to a police probable cause statement, Angelo Sanchez, 34, was cut off by bartenders shortly before midnight and asked to leave the bar. Instead of walking out quietly, Sanchez became aggressive and struck bouncer Catarino Morales in the chest, officers said.
The trouble didn’t stop at the door.
Witnesses told police Sanchez grabbed a handful of gravel and hurled it toward staff, striking the passenger-side window of a car owned by Kaveus Taylor, another customer who lives in Rancho El Dorado.
“When I came outside, everything was already done. The police were already there,” Taylor, 51, told InMaricopa. “I saw a cop shining a light in my car. I asked, ‘What’s going on? This is my family vehicle.’”
Taylor said the impact cracked the glass but the tint kept it from collapsing completely. “The only reason it was held together was by the tint,” he said. “If that window wasn’t tinted, it would be gone. The whole window is done for.”
Duke’s owner Steve Kovach said security moved so quickly that most customers never realized a fight had broken out.
“This guy [Sanchez] tried a double-handed push against my bouncer. He was walked out. It was the most excitement we’ve had,” Kovach told InMaricopa. “We just have stellar security that had it handled. Next time, we’ll take him out the back.”
Kovach noted that Duke’s typically draws a calmer crowd.
“I’ve been surprised we haven’t had more of this. It’s a roadhouse,” he said of the restaurant and honky-tonk he opened in June. “We have an over-40 crowd for the most part.”
In the parking lot, another customer offered Sanchez and his wife a ride home, but Maricopa PD Sgt. Julio Collazo stopped the car before it left the property. Police said Sanchez refused to provide his name despite being warned it was a crime. He was arrested at 11:53 p.m. and later identified through facial recognition software.
Sanchez now faces charges of disorderly conduct, assault, criminal damage and refusal to provide a truthful name. Most are misdemeanors, but police said the gravel-throwing incident could rise to a felony if the car damage tops $1,000.
For Taylor, his first visit to Duke’s may also be his last.
“This is my first time and last time at Duke’s,” he said. “Neighbors told me it’s a nice place. They said the food is good, live music is good, and they were right. I’m sorry this happened.”
Taylor said his insurance will cover the damage but he’s waiting for police to secure security footage. “The video will show exactly what happened,” he said.
Sanchez was taken to the Pinal County jail in Florence where he awaits arraignment.
