Shifting Gears: 2 teens spark new Maricopa car scene

The Culver’s parking lot was packed Tuesday night — not with post-work commuters, but with lifted trucks, slammed Challengers and two teenagers responsible for a new Maricopa tradition.

Palo Brea resident Macie Rain said she felt tired of people saying there’s nothing to do in Maricopa.

“We wanted to make something for people with common interests to get together and to meet new people,” she said.

Rain reached out to her friend, Kaylin Hansen, who lives in Copper Ridge. Their shared love of cars and trucks inspired them to put something together: a car meet. Hansen introduced the idea to Culver’s general manager, Dylan Hogan, who also loves the car scene.

Hogan said after seeing the crazy car events in Scottsdale, he jumped on the opportunity to host the event in the Culver’s parking lot.

The teens advertised the event on Rain’s Instagram account, “c0pacars,” and attracted more than 125 cars and around 300 attendees, which included teens and families.

The event indeed brought all kinds of cars to the lot and curbs, including a 2018 McLaren 720S, a Mercury Marquis and lifted trucks.

Bryan Brewster, Hansen’s stepdad and owner of one of three pricey McLarens in Maricopa, attended in support of her vision.

“There’s so much crap out there in today’s world. If you can get the kids together in a nice environment like this, where they can enjoy each other and the cars, it keeps them out of trouble,” Brewster said. “That’s a great thing.”

Andrew Lara, a Maricopa teen involved in a Phoenix car club, brought his Star Wars themed 2019 Dodge Challenger complete with a custom plate and Darth Vader wrap. He said he hopes “that this [event] goes very well” and looks forward to seeing more meets in Maricopa.

Hansen plans to expand the meets, incorporating different activities and themes.

“We’re gonna make this really exciting, really pop and really stand out,” she said.

    1. I’d be thrilled to see a local band venue. When I was a teen, we’d be jamming in our garages then playing shows with serious turnouts and it was amazing.
