Sully Bochat had a stolen gun on his hip and two middle fingers in the air as Maricopa police officers raced toward him, sirens blaring. You would’ve thought he snagged a get-out-of-jail-free card from Saul Goodman himself.
He didn’t.
Police arrested Bochat, 25, of Homestead, on Tuesday after what court documents describe as a 21-hour sequence of gunfire, flight, taunting and failed traffic stops that stretched across Maricopa.
Bochat remained in custody Monday after officers booked him on suspicion of three counts of unlawful flight, two counts of reckless driving, two counts of criminal trespass, criminal nuisance and unlawful discharge of a firearm, according to a probable cause statement filed in Western Pinal Justice Court.
The incident began about 6 p.m. May 11, when dispatchers received a report of a man riding a red four-wheeler on Hogenes Farm near McDavid Road and Taft Avenue. The caller reported the man was shooting a gun on the property, police said.
Officers identified the man as Bochat after prior contacts with him earlier that day, when he was wearing the same camouflage shirt and riding the same red four-wheeler, according to the probable cause statement.
Police found Bochat driving the four-wheeler westbound on Garvey Avenue near Wilson Avenue and tried to stop him. Instead, Bochat looked back at the patrol vehicles and accelerated to about 50 mph, according to the report. The officer activated emergency lights and sirens, but Bochat continued west and drove onto a dirt road at the end of Garvey Avenue.
Officers set up a perimeter to find him.
Then Bochat reappeared near Loma Road and Smith-Enke Road, police said. His four-wheeler was parked atop a dirt mound, and he waved his hands in the air with both middle fingers raised, “provoking me to chase him,” an officer wrote in the report.
As officers approached, Bochat turned around and accelerated westbound toward Green Road, according to the probable cause statement. Officers lost sight of him again after he drove off road through heavy brush.
About 7 p.m., officers spotted Bochat again on the opposite side of city near Bowlin Road and Hartman Road. They attempted another traffic stop, but police said Bochat again fled, accelerating onto a dirt road near Honeycutt Road and White-and-Parker Road.
Officers established another perimeter around the University of Arizona Farm near Smith-Enke Road, where Bochat was last seen. His supervisor ordered all officers to stand down and leave the area because of safety concerns, according to the report.
Police said both Hogenes Farm and the University of Arizona Farm were clearly marked with no trespassing signs.
The next day, around 3:30 p.m., officers found seven 9mm casings and one live 9mm round on the ground near a haystack on Hogenes Farm, according to the probable cause statement. The casings were found in the same area where a witness reported Bochat had been shooting from the red four-wheeler, police said.
Another witness told officers Bochat had stolen her firearm from her bedroom and taken off with it on the four-wheeler, according to the report. Officers also said tire tracks leading to the shell casings were consistent with four-wheeler tires.
Bochat was taken into custody May 12 at Copper Sky Recreation Complex.
Court records show Bochat has a lengthy criminal history, including more than a dozen prior cases involving allegations or convictions of aggravated assault, kidnapping, fleeing police, reckless driving and plenty more. He also has a history of revoked or suspended driving privileges dating back to 2022, including a driving-on-revocation case in Yuma earlier this year.
