There comes a time every year when a lot of Maricopans begin questioning why they moved here. This weekend might just be that time.

The region is expected to see its first 110-degree day by Saturday, roughly six degrees above normal temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather forecasters in Phoenix have issued a broad warning, stating there is a “moderate risk of heat-related illness for those sensitive to heat, especially without effective cooling.”

NWS Meteorologist Mark O’Malley cited high pressure building in the eastern part of the state for raising temperatures in central Arizona, including Maricopa.

“High pressure during the summertime is like a large dome of warm air,” the weatherman told InMaricopa. “When that moves over an area, that creates a lot of warming.”

Day temperatures will hover between 107 and 109 degrees throughout the week before jumping to 110 degrees on Saturday. Brace for an even hotter Sunday at 113 degrees.

Normal day-temperature ranges at this time of year are between 102 and 104 degrees, O’Malley said.

NWS meteorologists last month predicted the region would see above normal temperatures from June 15 to Sept. 30. However, O’Malley said that while “110 is definitely above normal, it’s not unprecedented.”

“This is typical for the middle of June regardless,” he said. “The odds are tilted towards a warmer than normal summer, but that’s not unusual because basically every summer for the past 20 years has been warmer than normal.”

Last year, Maricopa saw its first 110-plus degree day June 6, when the daily high temperature reached 111 degrees, according to Weather Underground. In 2023, temperatures didn’t exceed 110 degrees until June 26.
