Getting to know: Butch “the water guy” Deshong

What causes the spots and mineral build up on my glasses, faucets and shower? Do I have to use salt or potassium to remove the hardness from my water? Does hard water reduce the efficiency of my water heater and dishwasher?

Don’t water filters remove important minerals from my water? Is it true that soft water doesn’t rinse shampoo from my hair? Will soft water damage my plumbing or septic tank? Do reverse osmosis systems waste water? Why do water system prices range from $150 to $6,000? Do I need a reverse osmosis system, water softener or whole house water treatment system?

Where is a new homeowner to find honest, reliable answers to these questions? Call “Butch the Water Guy.”

For eight years, Deshong converted seawater into drinking water aboard nuclear submarines while in the Navy. After leaving the Navy, he taught electronics. He was involved in the development of the first microprocessor in the world while employed at Intel and worked in the semi-conductor industry from 1981 to 1989.

After that, he subcontracted in the water treatment business, performing commercial and residential installation and service for several big name water companies around the Valley.

Deshong’s experience brought him to several realizations: he knew how water treatment equipment was made, he knew what fair market value was, he knew what a good warranty should be – he knew that no one in the Valley was offering its customers the best of any of these. So, in 1989, he opened his family-owned and operated business, Advantage Pure Flo, Inc.

Deshong hand-picked every component for his water-treatment systems, designed to his specifications. He determines a system’s capacity based on the size and needs of clients – not the square footage of their home. His equipment purifies or softens on a regular cycle so that it doesn’t clean too often and waste too many chemicals. He uses the best carbon block filtration system available. He has priced his systems fairly, based on high quality, low maintenance and long life.

Deshong runs his business the way things were done 40 years ago – with a handshake and desire for customer satisfaction. Payment is due when the system is installed to clients’ satisfaction – no up-front deposits required. He handles sales personally to ensure that every system meets, but does not exceed, each customer’s needs.

His wife of 33 years, Sandy Deshong, efficiently handles the administrative part of the business. His installer and service technician have been with Deshong for as long as he can remember. Advantage Pure Flo, Inc. is bonded, insured, and licensed by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors and has been a member of the Water Quality Association since 1994.
