UPDATE 11:28 a.m. Maricopa Police Department said officers responded to the school after a student reported hearing about a possible weapon on campus. Police said information about the type of weapon and who may have been in possession of it was extremely limited.
Out of an abundance of caution, police assisted school administrators in conducting a search for a possible weapon. No weapons were recovered, police said.
The reporting student did not see a weapon, and ultimately no weapon was found.
“We commend the student for speaking up and telling a trusted adult about what they heard,” said MPD in a statement.
ORIGINAL STORY 10:29 a.m. The morning parking lot at Legacy Traditional School looked more like dismissal than drop-off as parents left work to pick up their children.
The Maricopa campus of Legacy Traditional Schools was placed on a temporary hold just before 8:30 a.m. after a student reported a potential threat, school officials said in a statement sent to parents.
Administrators emphasized that there was no active threat at the time the hold was initiated and said the precautionary measure was taken to ensure student and staff safety while the situation was assessed.
“All students and staff are safe and accounted for,” the school said in a message sent to families. The administration added that it was “working closely with local law enforcement” during the investigation.
During a hold, students remain inside their classrooms and normal movement around campus is paused. No information was released about the nature of the reported threat or how long the hold would remain in effect.
