For the first time in its history, Maricopa Little League is sending four All-Star teams to the state championships Monday.
“It doesn’t get any better than this,” Little League President Jonathan Weiss told InMaricopa.
In Little League, All-Star teams consist of top players from local leagues who compete in district tournaments for a chance to advance to state. The four Maricopa teams — two baseball and two softball — captured the District 4 title, which covers all of Pinal County.
The boys 10U baseball team — composed of 9- and 10-year-olds — won each of its four games from June 17 through June 23 by mercy, meaning the games ended early when Maricopa had an insurmountable lead.
Across their four games, the baseball team outscored its opponents 51–3 overall. The players and three coaches bleached their hair afterward to celebrate their advancement to state, according to team manager Richard Poole.
The boys 14U junior baseball team — made up of 13- and 14-year-old players — stayed undefeated after a tense comeback game June 21 when they secured a win 15-12 over Florence.
Team manager Chris Sullivan credits the team’s success to the supportive culture between players.
“When it comes down to it, all the boys are friends … They pick each other up when they can see one of them is down. They have a good time,” he said.
To celebrate, Maricopa Little League bought a bat bag for each of the 47 players advancing.
