Several young athletes from a Maricopa youth track club posted nationally ranked performances while representing the city at meets across Arizona, most recently at USA Track & Field’s Arizona Regulation in Phoenix on Saturday.

Members of the Maricopa Peregrines Track & Field club compete in a range of events including sprints, distance races, jumps and throws. According to information provided by the club, multiple athletes currently rank among the top competitors in the U.S. in their respective age groups by USATF.

Among them is Kumina Griffiths of Rancho El Dorado, a 7-year-old student at Mobile Elementary School who is competing in his second season of track.

Griffiths ranks first nationally among 7-year-olds in both the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.24 seconds and the 60-meter dash with a time of 9.22 seconds, according to the club. He also ranks ninth nationally in the 200-meter dash with a time of 34.14 seconds and fourth nationally in the long jump with a distance of 12 feet, 5.25 inches.

Another athlete, Reign Amatrading, ranks 16th nationally in the girls 9-10 long jump division with a mark of 11 feet, 2.75 inches. Her brother, Josiah Amatrading, competes in the boys 11-12 javelin division and is ranked fourth nationally. He qualified for the Junior Olympics in Georgia last year.

Distance runner Parker Todachine, who lives in the Maricopa Meadows, ranks fifth nationally among 11-year-old boys in the 3000 meters with a time of 12:28.98. Parker and his brother Danny Todachine both advanced to the Junior Olympics in Georgia last year.

Danny Todachine also ranks third nationally among 10-year-olds in the javelin with a throw of 23.68 meters.

The club’s boys 4×100 relay team in the 11-12 age group — Alex Szpara, Parker Todachine, Dave Ayinde and Langston Cobbs — is ranked second in Arizona.

In an email to InMaricopa, club representative and Glennwilde resident Angelika Szpara said the team’s athletes and volunteer coaches are committed to developing both athletic ability and character.

“Every athlete on the team works very hard training and is setting new personal records at the meets,” she said. “Our coaches are all volunteers and are setting a great example for young athletes because they are also competing and bringing home medals.”

All athletes on the Maricopa Peregrines team are Maricopa residents, according to the club.

Next up: Maricopa Peregrines will host a track meet Saturday at Maricopa High School that is expected to draw more than 700 athletes, according to Coach Sam Szpara.
