A national veterans organization has planted roots in Maricopa, bringing a new hub for service, camaraderie and support to the city’s growing veteran community.
The Marine Corps League’s LCpl. Joshua Lucero Detachment 1469 is now meeting regularly at the Maricopa Veterans Center, offering local Marines, Navy Fleet Marine Force personnel and supporters a place to stay connected and continue serving.
The congressionally chartered nonprofit is made up of honorably served Marines and Navy FMF corpsmen and chaplains, along with associate members who support its mission.
Detachment 1469 serves Maricopa and surrounding communities through programs focused on veteran support, mentorship and outreach. According to its materials, the group provides assistance to veterans and their families, partners with other veteran service organizations and participates in community events.
Members also take part in honor guard and funeral services, youth programs and Toys for Tots support, continuing a long-standing tradition of service beyond active duty.
The organization emphasizes “brotherhood and camaraderie” while giving veterans a way to remain connected to Marine Corps traditions and values of honor, courage and commitment.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Maricopa Veterans Center, 41614 W. Smith-Enke Road, Suite 100.
The detachment is named in honor of Lance Cpl. Joshua E. Lucero, a Tucson Marine who was killed in 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Organizers say the group aims to create a place where “veterans take care of veterans” while strengthening ties within the local community.
