Heritage District traffic stop nets stolen gun, meth, pink AR-15: cops

A Maricopa man was arrested with an alleged stolen firearm and suspected methamphetamine in his car.

It started with a during a traffic stop near Honeycutt Avenue and Taft Road in the Heritage District on Friday afternoon. A Maricopa police officer stopped a red and black Toyota Tundra shortly after 2 p.m.

The driver, identified as George Martinez III, 37, told the officer he had a handgun near his right leg. Police temporarily seized the weapon and learned through dispatch that the handgun, a Sig Sauer P229, had been reported stolen out of Tucson.

Martinez was detained, and officers later confirmed the firearm was stolen. A search of Martinez’s person uncovered a small bag containing white residue that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, according to arrest records.

During a search of the vehicle, officers also found a pink AR-15 style handgun with a loaded 60-round magazine behind the rear driver-side seat. Police records do not make note if the pink gun was registered to Martinez. Police said Martinez did not disclose the presence of the second firearm when asked.

Martinez was arrested on felony possession of a stolen firearm, misconduct involving weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia.

If convicted on all charges, Martinez could face 3¾ years in prison.
