One of the most effective tools for early detection of melanoma is the ABCDE rule:
A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other.
B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, notched or blurred.
C – Color: The mole shows different colors such as shades of brown, black, tan or even white, red or blue.
D – Diameter: Spots larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) may be concerning.
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color or symptoms (such as bleeding or itching).
