Maricopa High School Rams swim teams hit the water today and Thursday to compete in their final two home meets at the Copper Sky pool.
The Rams’ first meet is at 4 p.m. today versus Florence and Poston Butte High Schools. They take on Desert Sunrise High School and Horizon Honors High a 4 p.m. Thursday for Seniors Night.
“I think the team will have two very competitive competitions this week,” MHS head coach Meg O’Brien, who has been coaching competitive swim teams since 2022, told InMaricopa. “We stack up well against Florence, Poston Butte and Horizon Honors from the boys side. We have a very competitive boys team that thrives off competition. Our girls team, while low in numbers, will pull out some great wins and relays that help us with points for a hopefully overall team success.”
At the Division II level, MHS has several ranked swimmers:
- Luis Sanchez-Quiroz (senior): 11th in state (100 Fly) and 10th in state (100 backstroke)
- Holden Gehrke (junior) is 3rd in state (500 Free) and 5th in state (100 breaststroke)
- Boys 200 free relay (9th in state): Luis Sanchez-Quiroz (senior), Mykah Bitter (junior), Dante Flores (freshman), Holden Gehrke (junior)
- Boys 400 Free Relay (14th in state): Luis Sanchez-Quiroz (senior), Orion Chaturvedi (sophomore), Dante Flores (freshman), Holden Gehrke (junior)
Other notable rankings:
- Mykah Bitter (junior): 42nd (100 backstroke), 95th (100 freestyle).
- Orion Chaturvedi (sophomore): 45th (100 backstroke), 51st (100 fly).
- Raycer Martin (senior): 58th (100 breaststroke), 60th (200 Individual medley).
- Dante Flores (freshman): 66th (100 breaststroke), 24th (500 free).
- Micaela Golez (senior): 51st (100 breaststroke).
O’Brien coaches 10 boys and five girls at MHS.
Seniors Night on Thursday will celebrate seven seniors. Most have been on the team for three or four years.
“Our boys relays are really something to see from the speed and focus. These relays are contenders for Top 16 at state this year, which the team hasn’t seen in years,” O’Brien said.
“Overall, we are a small but mighty team who is really making a wave already for the D-II State Championship in November,” O’Brien said.
