Maricopa police and fire crews worked together to extinguish a blaze after a trash can fire spread to an Alterra home this afternoon.
Police responded first to the fire on the 17000 block of North Costa Brava Avenue at about 2:40 p.m., which caused a tower of black smoke.
A Maricopa police officer splashed buckets of water while a civilian grabbed a garden hose to douse the blaze until fire crews arrived.
Firefighters quickly started spraying the flames with their firehoses. After the debris on the ground tapered down to a smolder, smoke was seen still coming out of the side of the home and crews cut into a wall to extinguish those flames.
“[It] looks like it was a trash can that caught fire on the exterior of the home and extended into the building,” MFMD spokesperson Monica Williams said.
“The cause hasn’t been determined,” Williams said.
There were no injuries.
