We here at InMaricopa love a good poll. It’s like talking to all of our neighbors at once. We process the news of the day together. Sometimes there are head scratchers. Like when the executive order came down to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Does it rejuvenate America’s greatness? Our shoulders are hunched. Our elbows are out and our palms are up. We dunno.
So, we asked our neighbors.
And about 1,000 of you responded to our poll that ended Friday.
The question was: What will you call the body of water east of Mexico and south of the United States?
Nearly 3 in 5 Maricopa respondents (59.6%) said they preferred Gulf of Mexico.
The rationale on InMaricopa’s Facebook page looked like this:
“Every other nation in the world will call it the Gulf of Mexico,” said Meadows resident Alycia Ancelma Atriano.
“What about addressing something that is IMPORTANT to voters, and not spend taxpayer money on frivolous things,” said Glenn Schleifer, Senita.
There were others who justified the America name change.
“The name better describes the gulf. The entire area borders AMERICA. Northern, Central, South America. Why it was ever named Gulf of Mexico really doesn’t describe its well. Not the most important facing our nation but interesting and better description,” argued Roxanne Hoffer from Cobblestone Farms.
Google changed the name on their map to Gulf of America. Apple Maps, too. So did Bing. You know what map is holding firm and agrees with you, Maricopa? Good ol’ MapQuest.com.
