Maricopa residents get rare chance to question a judge

Most people only encounter a judge from a distance — seated behind a bench, ruling on cases inside a courtroom few fully understand.

Western Pinal Justice Court Judge Patricia Glover spent Saturday afternoon trying to change that with the city’s first “Meet the Judge” event at Adobe Blinds & More.

“When we go through judicial training, for security reasons they actually tell us not to do this,” Glover told InMaricopa.

But as Maricopa’s population and court caseloads continue to surge, Glover said she believes educating residents about the judicial system outweighs the discomfort that can come with stepping outside the courtroom.

Residents filed in and out of the event, where display boards explained what the justice court is, the types of cases it handles and number of filings over the last five years. Residents also asked questions directly to Glover about how judges make decisions, rising eviction cases and the limits of judicial power.

Glover said one of the biggest misconceptions people have is believing judges can rule based on personal opinions or outside information.

“It really comes down to what is presented to us,” she said. “We can’t make a decision based off our personal beliefs.”

Glover, who is also currently running to retain her seat from challenger Tom Chapman, also had campaign materials available for attendees. The event featured voter registration opportunities hosted by Hidden Valley resident Robin Davis and informational resources about justice court services.

Glover said her main goal was helping residents better understand a court system that can often feel distant or intimidating.

“Ultimately, the court is here to serve the community,” she said.
