Maricopa Police Department will receive $35,000 in state funding to ramp up DUI enforcement and speed enforcement around the city. The grant awards were announced this morning.
The funds come from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, which divvies up federal grant dollars to law enforcement agencies each year to fund education, outreach, equipment and targeted enforcement aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities on Arizona roads. The awards announced today are part of the federal fiscal year that began last month and runs through Sept. 30, 2026.
MPD will receive $10,000 for DUI enforcement to add focused patrols and supply officers in the field, and another $25,000 for speed and traffic enforcement to bolster Selective Traffic Enforcement Program campaigns that explain traffic laws. Part of the STEP program is sharing safety tips with the public.
For nearby state-operated roads, like the infamous State Route 347, the Arizona Department of Public Safety was awarded $465,682 for its statewide efforts. DPS will have $90,000 in federal dollars for DUI or impaired driving enforcement, $25,000 for distracted driving enforcement, $40,000 for accident investigations and $42,000 for street racing enforcement.
In practice, these funds are used to pay for overtime and additional officers on patrol, according to GOHS training material.
