Poll: Maricopa says thanks, but where’s Costco?

Maricopa residents looked at the proposed Honeycutt Square tenant lineup and collectively asked: What else you got?

More than 1,100 readers weighed in on InMaricopa‘s latest poll asking which part of the proposed development would be most useful to the city. The options included a laundromat, self-service car wash, office suites, auto mechanic shop and a Little Caesars.

The winner? “None of these.”

The catch-all option collected 464 votes, accounting for nearly 40% of all responses and finishing well ahead of every individual business category.

This included readers like Natalie Elza of Amarillo Creek who wanted to see, “Costco, Sam’s Club, Target or WinCo.” In fact, Costco and WinCo Foods both came up in the Facebook comments nearly a dozen times each.

Others hoped to see sit-down chains like Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse, while a handful of readers, including Christina Smalley, argued the city still needs a community arts center.

And Joe Thompson said he hoped for a “strip club to get city council [panties] in a knot.”

Good luck with that one, Joe.

Maricopans respond to the poll question, “Which part of the Honeycutt Square proposal would be most useful for Maricopa?”

Gary Smith of Anderson Farms made his request more bluntly: “How about a damn dry cleaner.”

He’s not alone. Bringing a dry cleaner or laundromat to the city generated the greatest number of comments on Facebook. And in the poll of actual proposed tenants, the laundromat dominated with 334 votes, earning roughly 29% of the total vote.

Meanwhile, the self-service car wash came in third with 230 votes, while office suites, Little Caesars and an auto mechanic shop trailed far behind.

  1. Maricopa already has all the fast food you can think of actual sit dwn restaurants would be nice costco would be another option but you need anything entertainment for kids a roller rink nxt to a dave and bustster would be amazing out there give more to the kids that have nothing to do out there

  2. Hi great news kids will do art. Love that. Also some of us don’t like using social media to connect anymore, if u send us a prepaid post card we will vote. Everyone knows online polls are just a tool to lie about what ppl really want. Think about it. Why do we still only have one way in and out of Maricopa? Why is gas so far away? Why is gas cheaper everywhere else? 1 dollar store? Nobody needs 2 frys, but Sorrento does need a Buckeys super gas station or a QT and a dollar store way over here. Don’t build apartments w/ o enough washing machine access, let us have alt ways in and out of the city. And NO DATA CENTERS! 500 DEGREE EXHAUST 24 HRS A DAY IS HORRIFIC ALSO 10 BILLION GAL OF H20 PER MONTH EVERY MONTH FOR ETERNITY?? NO SIR.

    1. I’m waiting for that AI bubble to explode (and it totally will) so all these morons who spent millions on data centers can go bankrupt.

What friggin genius decided to put a data center in the effing desert? It’s already unbearably hot here, this is going to drive people OUT of Maricopa lol

    1. Just like disc golf that hardly anyone ever plays anymore, Maricopa likes to hop on the trendy bandwagon and builds crap for whatever’s popular at the time/played by a handful of people instead of thinking about long term projects that can benefit the entirety of the city’s residents.

It’s like Maricopa can’t make up its mind about whether to be a retirement community or a “family friendly” one, yet with the lack of actual senior care and lack of activities for kids, it’s neither.

Side note, I’m getting sick of city officials posting articles on here about “let’s get your opinion” and NEVER listening to the residents, and just railroading whatever the hell they want anyway.

  3. I would love to see less apartments and homes developing and a better college for our children. Maricopa has nothing to offer all these young people after they graduate from High School.

  4. Medical centers like doctor’s offices, Costco , mom and pop sit down restaurants, chain sit down restaurants like Red Robin, places for people to WORK, Winco, yes another Frys, and NO MORE APARTMENTS!!!!!!!! And another way to Chandler please. Stop bringing all these people in, Maricopa doesn’t have the infrastructure.

  5. Is this going to a developer proposes a plan, Maricopa approves it, and nothing takes place for a couple of years? Then the builder comes back and asks for changes, the city grants the changes. Except it is different people on each committee and city council.

There has to be a time table and a date as to when the building is to start with little delay. Wasn’t there supposed to be a build across from the casino. It was another presentation that I sat through. I believe the builder was building homes on the lot line. It had many pluses to it. It was also another presentation from a previous one, years earlier.

Hold them to the date or . . . .

  6. There’s not 22,000 apartments here. That said, would you rather have Section 8 apartments or homeless people wandering the streets?

Better yet, tell us what exactly YOU think “Section 8” housing means.

Regarding immigrants, if they’re here legally, what’s your problem? Like really, SAY what your problem is.
