UPDATE: Lockdown lifted at Butterfield Elementary

UPDATE 12:42 p.m., Nov. 21, 2024: A lockdown at Butterfield Elementary School was lifted at 12:15 p.m. today.

According to school officials, police found an empty gun magazine on the campus during an investigation and “concluded there is no threat to the school.”

ORIGINAL STORY 12:08 p.m., Nov. 21, 2024: A report of a weapon on campus caused a lockdown at Butterfield Elementary School this morning, according to Maricopa Unified School District spokesperson Mishell Terry.

About eight Maricopa police vehicles arrived at the school on Honeycutt and Donithan Roads after school administrators said they learned of a weapon brought on campus.

Police and administrators did not specify the type of weapon or if it was found, but said the lockdown was part of a “precautionary measure.”

“There is currently no threat to the school community,” said Maricopa Police Department spokesperson Monica Williams.

The school remains on lockdown, but parents arrived to pick up students by 11:30 a.m.
