VIDEO: Traffic cam appears to show violent 2 a.m. beating at city crossroads

Newly released surveillance footage seems to show a man repeatedly punching and kicking a woman in a Maricopa intersection during what police describe as a domestic violence incident earlier this year.

The video was released yesterday to InMaricopa following a Freedom of Information Act request.

Police say the traffic camera captured an assault that happened April 3 at 2 a.m. at Porter and Smith-Enke Roads. It appears to show a figure punching an unidentified woman 15 times, stomping on her head and kicking her as she lay on the ground. Maricopa Police Department says that man is 43-year-old George Bingham.

The victim told dispatchers later that morning she had met with Bingham, whom she described as her intimate partner, when the encounter escalated into an argument and fight. The video appears to show the woman initiating the physical violence before Bingham brutally attacks her in the roadway. A second man, dressed identically to Bingham, is seen watching the assault unfold. He later appears to linger and speak with the victim as she tries to flag down passing cars, none of which stop, until officers arrive.

Authorities said the woman was able to escape when Bingham paused to put his shoe back on. He then fled the scene in his car, leaving the woman — and the second man — to speak with police minutes after the attack.

Bingham was arrested 40 days later in Mesa and booked into the Pinal County jail. He is charged with aggravated assault and endangerment, both designated as domestic violence crimes. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.

The case against Bingham is ongoing. He next has a hearing Sept. 9 at which the state and his defense team will weigh possible plea deals being offered. Bingham is free on bond and has pleaded not guilty.
