Two men wearing camouflage face masks were arrested after Walmart security stopped them at the garden-center exit, where police say surveillance video showed them taking items without paying.
Maricopa police responded to Walmart on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway around 5:19 p.m. Oct. 1 after a report of a shoplifting in progress.
According to a probable cause statement, officers found two men matching the descriptions of the suspects walking toward a nearby apartment complex. One was wearing a white tank top and riding a bicycle.
Police identified the men as Amir Badgett and Davontae Lewis, both 24.
Store security showed police surveillance video that allegedly showed the men entering the store through the garden section and placing items in a Walmart bag. The video then showed them passing the registers without attempting to pay, according to the probable cause statements.
Store security stopped the men at the garden exit and recovered the items.
Police said the items recovered from Lewis were worth $109, while those recovered from Badgett were worth $66.04.
Both men initially told police they had not stolen anything, according to the probable cause statements. After police told them about the video, both said they intended to steal the items but were stopped by Walmart loss prevention.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center. Both are scheduled for an in-custody hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
