If you spot a little more pink than usual on a Maricopa police uniform this month, there’s a reason.
Maricopa Police Department officers are wearing pink patches throughout October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The patches are intended to show support for people battling breast cancer, celebrate survivors and honor those who have died from the disease, according to the department.
The pink ribbon has become an internationally recognized symbol of breast cancer awareness, representing support for those affected by the disease and efforts to promote awareness, fundraising and early detection.
MPD first introduced its pink patches in 2023 as part of the department’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month efforts. At the time, Police Chief Mark Goodman said the patches represented the department’s commitment to supporting people affected by breast cancer.
The department also hopes the patches will serve as a reminder of the importance of awareness and early detection. For families affected by breast cancer, the gesture is also meant to be a reminder that they are not alone.
MPD is encouraging residents to join the effort throughout October by wearing pink and helping spread awareness.
