Maricopa man faces felonies after police say he threatened car wash employees with bat

[Pinal County Sheriff's Office]

A 44-year-old Maricopa man is facing two felony charges after police say he threatened two Dash Express employees with a baseball bat following a dispute over trespassing.

Police arrested Derrick Williams Sept. 25 after officers responded to a high-priority call about an unwanted person at the car wash on John Wayne Parkway and Hathaway Avenue, according to a probable cause statement.

An employee told police Williams had been asked to leave the property after being found in an employee-only area. Williams initially remained in the parking lot, where he was again told to leave.

As employees approached him, Williams grabbed an aluminum baseball bat from his vehicle, brandished it and moved towards the employees, according to the probable cause statement. He allegedly yelled, “You’re f***ing with the wrong person,” while holding the bat.

Police reviewed surveillance footage, which showed Williams holding the bat toward the employees and remaining at the scene after being told to leave.

When officers asked Williams about the incident, he denied brandishing the bat and said he had permission to enter the employee-only area. He also claimed he had the bat for self-defense.

The incident followed an earlier encounter at the same business on Sept. 18. According to the statement, Williams was found in a restricted employee-only area and was told to leave.

Police charged Williams with two counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument and two counts of third-degree criminal trespassing. He has a hearing scheduled for later today.
