For drivers navigating Smith-Enke Road and Desert Greens Drive, the game of chicken may finally be coming to an end.

A new traffic signal is coming to the crash-prone intersection, although drivers will have to endure a few weeks of overnight construction before it starts doing its job.

Crews are scheduled to begin the next phase of improvements at the intersection the week of Oct. 5, installing poles and equipment for a new traffic signal, according to the city of Maricopa.

The work is expected to continue through the end of October, with crews working overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect lane closures in the work zone, although the intersection will remain open and there will be no full road closure.

The signal project follows a series of crashes at the intersection and was approved unanimously by the City Council last year.

The first phase began in June and included construction of a westbound right-turn lane on Smith-Enke Road, along with a traffic signal cabinet and meter pedestal. That work also temporarily closed Desert Greens Drive through Colby Drive.

Now comes the part that will make the traffic signal actually, well, signal: crews will install the signal poles and associated equipment.

The project is estimated to cost $874,000, according to the city budget.
