A report of possible trespassers in Acacia Crossings drew a large Maricopa police response Monday afternoon, sparking neighborhood concern and online speculation before officers released the minors involved to their parents, according to a department spokesperson.

Maricopa police officers were dispatched to a home in the subdivision just after 5 p.m. Monday for a report of “individuals possibly trespassing in the area,” said MPD spokesperson Monica Williams.

“Officers made contact with the individuals, who told officers they were knocking on doors to solicit for landscaping jobs,” Williams said. “Given the individuals were minors, the officers released them to their parents. The investigation is ongoing.”

The response happened near Alamendras Street, according to Acacia Crossings resident Drew Digrazia.

Digrazia said neighbors believed minors had been trying to break into homes and that one person said they may have been armed. He said police were chasing people through backyards, clearing yards door to door and questioning a potential suspect in front of his home.

MPD did not confirm those details Tuesday.

Concern spread quickly among residents. On the social media site Nextdoor, Acacia Crossings resident Karen Rastatter asked why police were stationed at the two entrances to the subdivision along State Route 238.

Another Acacia Crossings resident, Kaytlyn Olsen, wrote: “Spoke with a policeman, people are jumping through backyards trying to break into houses… Make sure you are all securing every entrance of your home, especially at night now.”

MPD has not said anyone was trying to break into homes.

Photos shared with InMaricopa show multiple Maricopa police officers and marked patrol vehicles in the residential neighborhood. In one image, officers appear to be speaking with a person near a driveway. Other images show at least four officers and multiple police vehicles in the street.

Williams said the investigation is active.
