After shooting in Tortosa, 1 arrested on SR 347

(First InMaricopa) A suspect was taken into custody this afternoon after police responded to reports of gunfire from a white SUV on Vemto Street in Maricopa’s Tortosa neighborhood, according to the authorities.

Shots fired prompted a “heavy” police response at 2 p.m. When officers arrived, they located a home and a vehicle that appeared to have been struck by bullets. Multiple spent shell casings were also recovered.

Based on witness statements and camera footage, officers said they identified a gunman and suspect vehicle. Around 3:45 p.m., officers from the Maricopa and Gila River Police Departments located the SUV near Interstate 10 and State Route 347. Police said the suspect was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop, and the weapon used was also recovered.

By 4 p.m., a detective was canvassing the neighborhood, asking residents if their doorbell cameras had captured any footage related to the shooting. A sedan with a Lyft sticker and Arizona license plates was being loaded onto a tow truck as Maricopa police officers were pulling crime scene tape down from around the car.

There were no injuries reported, and police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

That suspect has not been named.
