The roar inside Desert Sunrise High School’s gym this morning wasn’t from a basketball game or a typical student assembly.

It emanated from a crowd of DSHS seniors, their parents, teachers and college representatives recognizing College Decision Day, when seniors officially declare where they plan to attend college.

DSHS College and Career Counselor Allie Krigbaum said the school wanted to be able to celebrate with the students in opting to advance their education in a style typically reserved for athletes.

“We wanted to make sure to celebrate all [the students], because no matter where they’re going or what they’re doing or what they’re majoring in, all their paths are super important,” she told InMaricopa. “We want to make sure we celebrate them so they feel excited.”

That excitement played out as each student’s college decision was announced, whether in Arizona or across the country.

DSHS senior Aylin Galvez said she was accepted to Central Arizona College and will be studying pre-construction with a plan to eventually transfer to Northern Arizona University’s engineering program.

“I’m just excited to get that experience of [being in] a college environment and being able to learn new things,” she said.

Krigbaum said the program felt both celebratory and emotional.

“I almost started crying because I’ve worked with them for four years, but mostly their senior year, to get them to this amazing point. And then to kind of send them off is amazing,” she said. “I had a great college experience, so I’m excited for them, but also selfishly sad for me. Hopefully, I can keep in touch with them.”
