Flashing lights and running water filled a quiet street in Maricopa’s Desert Passage neighborhood this afternoon as firefighters doused a blaze that spread into the side of a home. No injuries were reported.
The fire broke out around 3:10 p.m. on Helen Court near Sands Drive, where Maricopa police closed off access as at least a dozen Maricopa Fire/Medical Department units swarmed the neighborhood. A police officer at the scene said crews were responding to a pair of next-door house-fire calls. An ambulance left the area with its lights activated about 3:25 p.m.
“They were called out with the initial response per standard procedure,” MFMD spokesperson Monica Williams said of the ambulance. “They usually run their lights in the vicinity of an incident, but there were no transports or injuries.”
Williams said the fire began in the side yard of one home and extended into part of the structure. The residents were able to exit safely on their own.
“There were initial reports that two structures were involved, so a larger first-alarm response was initiated,” she said. “Once the first crews arrived and assessed the situation, it was downgraded and crews were released before arriving.”
Williams said just before 4 p.m. that firefighters were gathering equipment and expected to clear the scene shortly.
