A 12-year-old was transported to the hospital today after a crash involving a motorized scooter.
The collision occurred around 5:45 p.m. at the intersection of Honeycutt and Porter Roads. The child was headed home following an athletic game at Legacy Traditional School when their motorized scooter collided with a vehicle, according to witnesses.
Witnesses said the child had just finished a basketball game and regularly rides the scooter home.
A public safety spokesperson told InMaricopa the child suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital with a parent as a precaution. They did not specify how the crash occurred.
North- and westbound traffic were temporarily reduced to one lane as crews responded to the scene.

Let me guess, car decided to use the bike lane as a turning lane while child was crossing the street?
Again? How many more injuries before traffic laws enforcement is taken seriously?
I guess you never know in a place where red lights are merely a suggestion.
Not a suggestion if you’re behind me at a light. In fact, light turns green and it’s 1 alligator, 2 Mississippi while looking both ways before foot off brake.
Right now, many of these vehicles fall into gray areas. Cities should clearly define:
What counts as a motorized vehicle (speed/power thresholds)
Minimum age requirements
Where they can be ridden (street vs. bike lane vs. prohibited areas)
If a scooter can hit 30–50 mph, it should be treated closer to a motorcycle than a toy. When rules are vague, enforcement becomes inconsistent—and easy to ignore.
