An 11-year-old was taken to the hospital tonight after being struck by a truck near Culver’s, marking the fifth reported pedestrian crash in Maricopa in four days.

The collision occurred in front of the restaurant at John Wayne Parkway and Edison Road. Maricopa Police Department officers were clearing the scene by about 8:15 p.m.

Maricopa Police spokesperson Monica Williams told InMaricopa the roadway has reopened.

“An 11-year-old was taken to the hospital as a precaution after being struck at low speeds by a truck,” Williams said, noting no “specific injuries” were reported on scene. “The truck was making a turn at the intersection and failed to see the kid, who happened to be dressed in darker clothing.”

The driver was cited. Authorities do not believe impairment is a factor, Williams said.

Details about the citation were not immediately available.

The crash follows a serious vehicle versus pedestrian collision late last night on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway near Porter Road in front of the Walmart plaza. In that case, a pedestrian was described as “seriously injured,” prompting a total shutdown between Porter Road and White-and-Parker Road. The Pinal County Vehicular Crimes Unit assisted in that investigation. Authorities have not disclosed whether the crash was fatal after the highway remained closed for more than eight hours overnight.

Friday’s crash adds to a troubling string of pedestrian incidents involving children across the city this week.

  1. Trucks get a “break” from police. Traffic enforcement should be equal to all, no offense to truck drivers amongst which I’m positive there’s a large portion of police and other first responders.
