The Headquarters Lounge is currently closed, and although staff say it will eventually reopen, they’re unsure when.
The closure follows the March death of longtime city matriarch Alma Farrell, who owned the establishment.
Because the liquor license remains in Farrell’s name, there is currently no person responsible for managing the license. For that reason, the lounge closed down, according to state officials.
InMaricopa attempted to contact Lounge management, but calls were not returned.
“We’re just having a problem with the liquor license,” a Headquarters diner employee said by phone, adding that the adjacent lounge “won’t be open for a while.”
The liquor license, listed under “Headquarters Buffet,” remains in good standing with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control.
“They did the right thing,” said Public Information Officer Luis Samudio.
The Headquarters restaurant opened in 1953, burned down in 1956 and was later rebuilt by the Farrell family.
