Sometimes helping a hospital patient doesn’t require medical training. It can be as simple as offering directions, listening to concerns or helping a family member find their way through the building.
That’s the idea behind Exceptional Community Hospital‘s new Patient Ambassador Volunteer Program, which is seeking community members interested in supporting patients and visitors.
Patient Ambassadors are non-clinical volunteers who work alongside hospital staff to improve comfort and communication for patients and their loved ones. Responsibilities may include greeting visitors, assisting with directions, providing companionship, helping with comfort rounds and supporting community outreach events.
While doctors and nurses focus on medical care, volunteers can help fill other needs, according to AnnaMarie Knorr, the hospital’s director of marketing and government affairs.
“Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting with a patient, listening to their concerns, or helping a family member find their way to a patient’s room,” Knorr said. “Those personal interactions can have a significant impact on the overall patient experience.”
Knorr said the program is particularly well-suited for Maricopa, where residents have frequently asked how they could become more involved with the hospital since it opened.
“This program allows residents to play an active role in supporting patients and families while strengthening the connection between the hospital and the community we serve,” she said.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Training, orientation and ongoing support will be provided.
Residents interested in becoming a Patient Ambassador can apply through the hospital’s website.
