Lisa Garcia: Why she’s running to continue on the MUSD board

Lisa Garcia.

It has been my honor to serve as a member of the Maricopa Unified Governing Board over the past year, and I humbly ask for your vote so I can continue my service.

Maricopa is my home. This is where I was born and raised, and where I chose to raise my own family. Now, I’m a mother and grandmother, and I’ve spent decades serving this community I love.

There is nothing more important than education. Great schools are the building block of our community, and I want to make sure each of our nearly 10,000 students receive the quality instruction they need to prepare them for a bright future. That begins with supporting all 11 of our schools — including families, teachers and administrators. As a governing board member, I work every day to be a strong voice for parents and families.

I am an elected member of the Ak-Chin Community Council, where I work to preserve and safeguard the health, safety, welfare and integrity of the people. I previously served as director of the Ak-Chin Parks & Recreation Department; development system manager for Harrah’s Ak-Chin; and senior and community planner for the Ak-Chin Planning & Development Department.

Children and families have always been my focus. I serve as a member of the First Things First Pinal Regional Partnership Council and chairperson of the Quail Run Building Materials Board of Directors. My past public service includes work with the St. Peter’s Indian Mission School Board, Gila River School Board Coalition and Ak-Chin Preschool Parent Group, among other community volunteerism.

Priorities:

Student instruction: Ensure MUSD’s nearly 10,000 students receive quality instruction that prepares them for a bright future.

Families, teachers and administrators: Support all 11 MUSD schools while serving as a strong voice and advocate for parents, families, teachers and administrators.

Community advocacy: Continue serving Maricopa families through public service and community involvement, drawing on her experience with the Ak-Chin Community Council and other organizations.

The idea of a third space is a gathering spot that isn’t work or home. Think a place like the cozy Central Perk coffee shop in "Friends" or the bar where everybody knows your name in "Cheers." Maricopa, what’s your favorite third space?
